Cool CPAs - Christopher W. Jenkins, CPA

Why did you decide to become a CPA?
I get bored relatively quickly. I felt that by becoming a CPA I would have an opportunity to be involved in many different companies. As I gained experience, I would be able to apply that knowledge to start my own company. After spending 5 years at a Big 8 (now Big 4) firm I went on to start 4 different companies. One of them, Arch Communications, is now the largest paging company in the world. I expect to start many more over the years ahead.

When you're not at work, what are you likely to be doing?
I love to fly. I own a Piper Saratoga which is a large single engine plane. This summer my family and I flew out to Jackson Hole and then around the area. I fly an average of 250 hours a year.

Are there any special activities you participate in?
I am a volunteer pilot with AirLifeLine. In conjunction with the Ronald McDonald House we provide free air transportation to people requiring medical treatment. Frequently I will pick up patients throughout New England and fly them to Boston. In addition to AirLifeLine, I am also a member of the Young Eagles organization. Young Eagles goal is to introduce kids to general aviation by flying 1 million kids by the end of 2003. I regularly spend my weekends flying kids around. Many of these kids are in foster homes or are otherwise disadvantaged. It is hard to imagine the expression on a kid's face when you offer to let them fly the plane.

What advice do you have for people who are considering joining the profession?
Get as much experience in your first job as possible. Also ensure that it will enable you to stay current in the profession since, although you may decide not to actively practice, you may also decide, at some point in the future, to once again become active. Always keep your options open.
